No.5, 1948 Jackson Pollock Abstract Expressionism Year : 1948 96" x 48" , Oil on Fibre board Year of Sale : 2006 $140 million No.5, 1948, by Jackson Pollock is the most expensive painting ever sold, privately or at an auction. The painting has the famous nest-like appearance as thick amounts of brown and yellow paint are drizzled on top of it. In 1940s, Pollock began painting with his canvases laid out on the studio floor, and he developed what was later called his "drip" technique. Pollock's technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term action painting. By defying the convention of painting on an upright surface, he added a new dimension, literally, by being able to view and apply paint to his canvases from all directions. He also ruptured traditions of art-making, giving new permissions to subsequent generations of artists in all mediums and gaining international notoriety. |

Woman III Willian de Kooning Abstract Expressionism 68"× 48.5" , Oil on Canvas Year : 1953 Year of Sale : 2006 $137.5 million Woman III is one of a series of six paintings by de Kooning done between 1951 and 1953 in which the central theme was a woman. Theres a lot of similarity between de Kooning and Pollock. Both were part of a group of artists called the New York School and both practiced action painting. The hallmark of de Kooning's style was an emphasis on complex figure ground ambiguity. The series Woman I–VI caused a sensation with its violent imagery and impulsive, energetic technique. These works caused a sensation, partially because they were figurative when most of his fellow Abstract Expressionists were painting abstractly, but also because of their blatant imagery. |

Triptych, 1976 Francis Bacon Figural Expressionism 78 x 58 in, Oil and pastel on canvas (in three parts) Year : 1976 Year of Sale : 2008 $86.3 million Dense with symbolism, the three panels in Triptych, 1976, are filled with a complex, highly charged allegory and supreme paint-handling which shows Bacon’s imagination at its highest pitch. Here, in the central panel, the human form is plagued by three hybrid biomorphic vultures, symbolic of Bacon’s inner demons. |

Yet a scrutiny of his composition reveals his interfacing with three important "forms" namely the vase, fish and bird. Bhaskaran loves to experiment and does not believe in sticking to a tried and tested formula. He believes an artist needs to move on and mature once a style and theme has become a popular. Bhaskaran has been an international jury member at the Florence Biannale, Italy since 2005. |
